Upon introduction, the Toyota Avalon XL and XLS are equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine that consumes 21-mpg in the city and 29-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed electronically controlled adaptive automatic transmission with overdrive and intelligence is standard on both trims.

The Toyota Avalon was redesigned for 2000. Body style changes include 1.2" added to overall width, 1" added to overall headroom, a 1" increase to rear occupant legroom and redesigned exterior styling. New standard features include a multi-information display, an upgraded stereo system and chrome body side moldings.
